Introduction to Ujjayi pranayama, ‘the ocean breath’ [beginner’s version]

When practising Ujjayi Pranayama, also called the ‘victorious breath‘, we add a slight constriction in the throat, making the inhales and exhales audible. The sound created in the back of the throat is often compared to ‘sound of waves or the wind through the tress.’ We inhale and exhale through the nostrils.
This pranayama increases the oxygenation of the lungs and gives endurance to the body. It removes toxins, soothes the nerves, while building internal body heat and toning the entire system.
People suffering from coronary troubles can practice Ujjayi Pranayama in a reclining position, without kumbhaka (breath retention).
After the practice, it is recommended to lie down in Savasana for 5 to 10 minutes in order to further increase the beneficial effects of the pranayama. Please note that when learning a new pranayama, it is always recommended to do so with the supervision of an experienced yoga teacher.
